And back AGAIN…

Gyroscope @ Challenge Stadium, supporting the Living End

So, it’s been months, what the bloody hell have I been up to?  Well, I started up Sunday Night Music Club to combat the fact I wasn’t really shooting that many shows, but now I AM back into the swing of things, poor old SNMC is tucked away for the next slow season.

I’m now lucky enough to be working for two regular clients, one web-based, and one print media. I also haven’t done a show for free since May, which is definitely a step in the right direction. Since I last did a proper update I’ve shot Tame Impala, Gyroscope, The Living End, Little Birdy, Tijuana Cartel, Bliss n Eso, Hilltop Hoods, The Butterfly Effect, and Doves. Getting the print media photos up is a bit of a vicious cycle. I can’t put them up anywhere until the paper’s out, which is a Thursday, so by the time I get around to actually getting them up, they’re a week old and ‘boring’, and I’m out shooting the next assignment. A ‘Month in Review’ type of post system might result in me, well, actually posting every now and again.

In non gig-shooty news, I got my tickets to The Academy Is… show the other day, and while I’m about ten years too old to  be really excited, I AM. Yay!

Xpress cover shoot @ King Carnival 151208

Gyroscope, Kings Carnival

A couple of weeks before Christmas, I got a fairly out-of-the blue phonecall from the editor of Xpress asking if I’d be available to shoot Gyroscope for the cover of their Christmas issue. ‘Of course’ I said, the nerves of doing my first cover shoot completely flattened out by being able to work with the Gyro boys again. It wasn’t until later that I found out I got the gig because the guys suggested me specifically, which was lovely of them, and very flattering.

We headed down to King Carnival in Mandurah (about an hour and a half south of Perth), as the cover was intended to promote Gyroscope’s appearance at the Rollercoaster Festival, which is held each year at the park next to the carnival. With the big old retro ferris wheel being an icon of the Mandurah foreshore, and closely associated with the festival by punters, I could think of no better backdrop.

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays to you all! May the next couple of weeks be relaxing and safe for you and your family.

Been quiet round these parts for a while, been stupidly busy between photos, Christmas shopping, and the good old day job. I’m not really getting much time off (basically, today is it!) but hopefully I’ll find some time soon to catch up on posts. Two live gigs, and one very very fun press shoot.

Gyroscope @ Metro City 031008

Gyroscope
Gyroscope, Metro City

Gyroscope’s epic ‘Australia’ tour came to a close with a sell out show at Metro City at the start of October. They’re only the second Perth band in my own recent memory to sell out this venue, so it’s a big deal, and a huge achievement by the boys. As seems to be the norm these days, I found myself there with camera in hand (with thanks to Rob who sorted out my pit access).

Gyroscope @ Fly By Night 300708

Alright, so apparently I suck at taking breaks. All it took was one sms mentioning the magic ‘G-word’, and I was packing up my gear for what seemed like my millionth Gyroscope shoot in the last year. Support for the evening came from Calerway, a band I’ve been working with for as long as I can remember. Two bands that are definitely never a chore to shoot. This is a pretty picture-intensive post, I wouldn’t suggest tackling it with dial-up.

Gyroscope @ HQ Leederville 130308

Gyroscope

I’ve been shooting for a few years now, and Perth’s not exactly a huge town, so it’s a new thing to come across a venue I haven’t shot at before. The latest installment of Myspace’s Secret Show series was taking place at HQ, the main dedicated all-ages venue in Perth. Being that most bands will play 18+ shows as well as all-ages I tend to go to those shows instead. However, Gyroscope aren’t ‘most bands’ and I was more than willing to brave the unknown and take on the role of Myspace shooter for the day.

The first…of many?

March 07th, 2008 | Category: Promo Photography

I’m not really the type to make a big song-and-dance when I get published anywhere, but I defy anyone not to get excited upon seeing one of their photos in Rolling Stone for the very first time:

That set of photos is distributed by their record company, so they’ve been popping up anywhere and everywhere. I still feel a little guilty over the fact I got paid to hang out with one my favourite bands for an afternoon and take photos of them. But I’m glad they were my first RS shot, instead of some random band I had no interest in. 😀
