Xpress cover shoot @ King Carnival 151208

Gyroscope, Kings Carnival

A couple of weeks before Christmas, I got a fairly out-of-the blue phonecall from the editor of Xpress asking if I’d be available to shoot Gyroscope for the cover of their Christmas issue. ‘Of course’ I said, the nerves of doing my first cover shoot completely flattened out by being able to work with the Gyro boys again. It wasn’t until later that I found out I got the gig because the guys suggested me specifically, which was lovely of them, and very flattering.

We headed down to King Carnival in Mandurah (about an hour and a half south of Perth), as the cover was intended to promote Gyroscope’s appearance at the Rollercoaster Festival, which is held each year at the park next to the carnival. With the big old retro ferris wheel being an icon of the Mandurah foreshore, and closely associated¬†with the festival¬†by punters, I could think of no better backdrop.

The Armada, Fly By Night, 281108

The Armada, Fly By Night

Part 1 of the catch-up posts, with more pictures than words, cause after a month my memory’s a little foggy. After promising full band shows for as long as I can remember, Jeff Martin finally unveiled his new project The Armada to an eager crowd at the Fly By Night in Fremantle. Essentially they’re the Tea Party, but without the awesome songs. I’m sure they’ll come in time though.

I missed the musical supports for the evening, but got there in time to catch Beautiful Rose showing off her belly dancing skills. Hypnotic, mesmerising, and certainly something different as an intro to a rock band’s set.

Merry Christmas!

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays to you all! May the next couple of weeks be relaxing and safe for you and your family.

Been quiet round these parts for a while, been stupidly busy between photos, Christmas shopping, and the good old day job. I’m not really getting much time off (basically, today is it!) but hopefully I’ll find some time soon to catch up on posts. Two live gigs, and one very very fun press shoot.

The Social Lifestyle

‘Australia’ premiere, ACE Cinemas Midland Gate

Since¬†moving on from Drum Media to join cross-town rivals Xpress Magazine, I’ve been thrown out of my comfort zone in a big way. Venue reviews, event coverage, and social photos make up a large part of Xpress’s content, and while I’d dabbled a little in the past, I think I’ll certainly be on a steep learning curve for the next few weeks, especially since most of these jobs require me to use my often-neglected flash and actually think about white balance.

One Movement launch @ Parmelia Hilton 281008

Category: Live Photography

phoblog212.jpg

A few weeks ago I got a call from Sunset Events asking if I could cover an event launch for them, as their usual guy was unavailable. Was no problemo, especially after they explained what the launch was for. So it was off to the swanky surrounds of Perth’s Hilton franchise to learn a little bit more about what was swimming in my head as ‘the new South By Southwest’.

Votevotevote

Category: Misc

While our American neighbours voted today for change, you can cast your vote in a far far less important election. A few weeks ago I entered four photos into the Perth Dance Music Awards ‘Best Scene Photograph’ competition and promptly forgot about it. Today I discover all four of my photos have been shortlisted, and are up for voting. Must’ve been a slow year for submissions, I’ve only shot two events that qualified, so had to scrounge up photos for submission.

But that said, it’d be quite nice to win, as the prize is a hire voucher for a Nikon D700 and lenses. Now, I’m not looking at switching teams any time soon, but I’ve been wanting to have a play with one for quite some time.

So if you’d like to vote, head on over to http://www.perthdancemusicawards.org/vote.php. You don’t have to sign up or log in ro anything. Nice and quick. My photos are #1, #3, #14, #15. Out of all of them I probably like #1 the best, but vote for whatever!

Gyroscope @ Metro City 031008

Gyroscope
Gyroscope, Metro City

Gyroscope’s epic ‘Australia’ tour came to a close with a sell out show at Metro City at the start of October. They’re only the second Perth band in my own recent memory to sell out this venue, so it’s a big deal, and a huge achievement by the boys. As seems to be the norm these days, I found myself there with camera in hand (with thanks to Rob who sorted out my pit access).

The Chemist

The Chemist
The Chemist, The Rocket Room

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of doing a few press photos for the boys from The Chemist. After taking this photo¬†of lead singer Ben at the Rocket Room a few months ago, I was keen to get back there and have another go with that backdrop. Luckily, management didn’t mind us taking over the venue for a few hours, so I carted my flashes, umbrellas and light stands into Northbridge for a cruisy little weekday shoot.

More reading…

Category: Misc

A month or so ago I stumbled upon a photography magazine called PHOTOICON. They’d done the unthinkable and dedicated an entire issue to concert photography. Yes, an entire issue. With awesome contributors. So while I was¬†a bit¬†turned off by the slightly uppity statement ‘The cool new cosmopolitan magazine of photography’ across the cover, it was still something I couldn’t pass up. $15 and a matter of days later it was in my hot little hands.

¬†Absolutely thoroughly recommended. Head on over to the PHOTOICON website to order a back issue (with free international postage). Interesting addition to anyone’s collection. And it’s Issue 7 you want to buy, just in case Jimi Hendrix on the cover wasn’t enough of a giveaway.
